The Robin Family

In early June (2003) we noticed a Robin's nest being built in a tree below our living room window. This was a great opportunity for some bird pictures.

This is a wide angle view of the tree the nest is in. The window 2nd from the left is where most of the other pictures are taken from.

June 18

2 eggs in the nest. Eventually, there will be 4.

June 18

Mamma Robin (I assume) sitting on the eggs.

A little fuzzy..the picture was taken though the window.

July 1

There be chicks!

This picture was taken around 10:30 in the morning. Still one 1 unhatched.

July 1

About an hour later. Last egg hatching. Mamma (well...I suppose it could be the Papa) bird stands watch.

July 1

Mamma sitting on the nest. Or maybe Papa? I don't know much about these birds. Would the Papa be sitting in the nest?  I have seen both of them on the edge of the nest. But they're very skitterish. I haven't yet been able to get a good shot of both of them at the nest.

July 2

Resting

July 3

Waiting to get fed.

July 4

Cleaning up the nest. For more on this activity, take a look at: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/spring/FecalSacs.html

(thanks, Catherine, for the info).

July 4

"Do ya hafta keep poking that camera down here?"

July 5

Hmmm...good tongue shot. Wings are starting to get some definition and feathers are forming.

July 7

The eyes are open...and beaks are getting long. They're  starting to look like birds. Be sure to look at the larger image of this one. You can really see some detail in the wing feathers and on the heard. The wing feathers look like little brushes.

July 7

Here's a parent up in a tree keeping a watchful eye while I wander around down below.

July 8

A good group shot showing a parent and all the  young-uns. It would've been nice to get a shot with both parents in the picture, but only once have I seen them both at the nest at the same time. If you look at the larger picture, the chick at the lowest point has it's eye open. The rest are snoozing away.

July 9

Waiting for breakfast. Mom (or maybe Dad) was just here but took off when showed up with the camera. Usually they just go sit on the roof & wait until I leave. The early morning light makes for harsh shadows.

July 9

It's nice to have someone to look up to. Hmmm...I only see three.  No..wait...the 4th is there...you can just barely see the beak.

July 10  (morning)

And then there were 3.

Well, the nest WAS getting a bit crowded. I found the other one on the ground underneath the tree. Sorry...he didn't make it. Just a bit too young to go flying off (or.. was he pushed???).

July 10  (afternoon)

Not much change...size-wise, but how often do you get to look down the throat of a 9-day old robin?

July 10  (afternoon)

Taken just after the last one. The parent flew in while I was taking pics. This one shows the color starting to form on the breast of one of the chicks.

July 13

Getting pretty crowded...

July 13

Parent keeps an eye on things.

July 14

On the edge.

July 14

Out on a limb.

July 14

Last minute briefing.

July 14

We're outa this dump!

July 14

They're GONE!!!

Well...it was fun while it lasted.
